5 Popular Nigerian Food Trends in Recent Years

There abound several food trends in Nigeria. I will be discussing five of them in this article. It is however pertinent to note that not every trend is worthy of jumping at as some could do more harm than good. Some of these popular food trends include:

Recipe Blogs/Vlogs

A recipe blog is a type of website or blog that features recipes and information about cooking and food. These blogs are often run by individuals who have a passion for cooking and enjoy sharing their favorite recipes with others. Some recipe blogs may focus on a specific type of cuisine or cooking style, while others may feature a wider range of recipes.

A recipe vlog, or video blog, is similar to a recipe blog, but instead of written content, the recipes and cooking information are presented in the form of videos. Vlogs are a popular format for sharing recipes because they allow viewers to see the cooking process in action, which can be helpful for those who are new to cooking or who want to learn new techniques.

Some popular recipe blogs and vlogs include:

SisiYemmie.

All Nigerian Recipes.

Chef Lola’s Kitchen.

Eat. Drink. Lagos.

Richeelicious.

Nigerian Food TV.

The Vegan Nigerian.

9jafoodie.

These blogs and vlogs often feature a mix of original recipes and recipes from other sources, such as cookbooks or magazine articles. Many of them also include photos or videos of the finished dishes, as well as tips and tricks for successful cooking. Some recipe blogs and vlogs may also include information on food trends, cooking techniques, and kitchen tools.

Food Trucks

Food trucks have become a popular option for people looking to grab a quick and tasty meal on the go. These mobile food vendors offer a wide variety of cuisine, from traditional street food like hot dogs and tacos, to more gourmet options like sushi and wood-fired pizza. Many food trucks are owned and operated by small businesses, and they are often found at events, festivals, and other busy locations. Some food trucks are even part of a larger network or franchise, allowing customers to enjoy their favorite dishes at multiple locations. In recent years, food trucks have gained a reputation for offering high-quality, diverse, and affordable food options, making them a popular choice for many people.

  • All you Need for Your Food Truck Business
  • Licenses
  • An equipped truck
  • Raw materials for production
  • Well experienced cooks
  • Plates, spoons and take-away packaging items
  • Cleaning essentials for sanitation procedures
  • Menu card (optional)

High-End Street Food

Street food is a type of food that is sold by a vendor on the street or in other public places, such as a market or fair. It is often quick and convenient and is often sold from a portable food booth, food cart, or food truck. In many parts of the world, street food is an important part of the local culture and economy.

In recent years, these street foods have gradually warmed their way into Nigerians’ hearts. There are just these appealing vibes that come with them so much that one has no reason but to create them, even if one can afford to buy expensive meals in restaurants, eateries, etc.

Some street food and snacks in Nigeria include:

  • Suya (or tire) refers to a skewered spicy meat dish popular in Nigeria.
  • Boli and Groundnut. Boli (or bole) refers to roasted plantains
  • Ewa Agoyin
  • Akara
  • Chin Chin
  • Puff-Puff
  • Akara
  • Ofada rice and sauce
  • Corn (both roasted and boiled)

Food Delivery

Food delivery companies are businesses that provide a service for delivering food from restaurants or other food establishments to customers’ homes or other locations. These companies typically partner with local restaurants and use a network of drivers to pick up and deliver orders to customers. Many food delivery companies also offer the option for customers to order food for pickup from restaurants, rather than having it delivered. Some popular food delivery companies include Jumia food, Chopnownow, HeyFood, Domino’s Pizza Nigeria, GoFood, etc.

Nowadays, a lot of Nigerians don’t even bother to appear physically to order their meals when in need of them. All you need to do is place your orders online and voila! Your food is delivered within a few minutes! Easy peasy! Gone are the days when despite your busy schedule and hungry, you just have to make a trip to the nearest restaurant or eatery to have your stomach filled.

Diet Culture

Diet culture refers to the set of beliefs and practices that promote weight loss and body shaming as a means of achieving health and beauty. It often involves a focus on restricting food intake and following strict dietary rules, as well as a tendency to equate thinness with health and worthiness. However, some diet cultures can have adverse effects on people’s physical and mental health, thereby contributing to the development of eating disorders and other health problems. It is therefore important to challenge and reject the harmful beliefs and practices of diet culture and stick to the beneficial ones.

Keto (Ketogenic) diet meal plan in Nigeria is now in vogue. It is an effective weight loss plan that can cure health-related problems.

The word “keto” in ketogenic is a diet that emphasizes how it allows the body to produce small fuel molecules called ketones. In addition. it is another fuel source for the body, used when blood sugar (glucose) is in short supply.

Ketogenic is a name for a low-carb diet. A ketogenic diet is based on the idea that limiting your carbohydrate intake and eating fats as an alternative will put your body in an abstained state where it will burn ketones in place of glucose thereby, resulting in a healthier you.

The truth is that in the Nigeria of today, most people are looking for various ways to shed their extra weight, the reason for this cannot be far-fetched as everyone wants to look sexy and attractive rather than looking bloated. The percentage of people looking to add more weight is less compared to those who want to lose it, hmm! Different strokes for different wolves!

All in all, I am a big fan of looking attractive and confident in whatever form you’d feel is right for you, without mincing words. However, it is important to shed extra weight which could pose to be a serious threat to one’s general well-being and life.

Conclusion

There are several food trends in Nigeria and the world, in general. The ones discussed in this article are just some of them, but not all.

From recipe blogs/vlogs, food trucks, high-end street food, and food delivery to diet culture, you don’t have to jump on every trend which may not be beneficial to you. For instance, just because everyone wants to shed some extra weight or add some more and you feel you also have to do what’s currently in vogue without thinking of the adverse effects it could have on you, then, you are wrong.

Also, probably because your friends are fans of street foods, you want to also try that out when some of these street foods might not be advisable to be taken by you especially because you probably are highly sensitive to any food cooked in the open.

Yes! Some people are so sensitive that their body system automatically weakens and gets immune to diseases like typhoid because they are something that was probably prepared with unhygienic water.

In all, study yourself, and know what your body system permits you to take and what you should frown at to avoid becoming a regular customer at the hospital.
