It is not news that there is very strong demand for business analysts around the world. However, as you are most likely aware, a good number of the roles are in IT environments. This implies that while they need you to understand the business, they need you to be able to relate with the tech side effectively. So, what do you really need to know to be a business analyst in a tech environment? The simple answer is: it depends. It depends on the job and the organization. A good starting point, though, is to be able to tick the following items on your list:
In most cases, a good BA should be able to:
Create all the needed documentation
- Create detailed, effective and testable requirements (if the requirements are wrong, the entire software development budget may be jeopardized)
- Create process models that can represent where you (your product or organization) are and where you are going (called “as is” and “to be” states)
- Create basic wireframes and whatever is needed for good UI requirements specifications
- Support developers with clarifications wherever necessary
- Work with quality assurance engineers (software testing teams) to ensure that the requirements which were developed earlier are met
- Support deployment and maintenance activities
- Run through the cycle again
You should be able to use a range of software tools to achieve these ends.
Depending on your organization and the projects it handles (and the stage of those projects), you may be needed in specific parts of the SDLC and may find yourself working more on certain types of things. Depending on your organization, you may use methodologies such as agile, with one of the most common agile approaches being Scrum. You would typically hear terms like “Scrum Master” and “Product Owner” in Scrum environments.
If you are looking to learn Business Analysis to work within tech and tap into the global demand, you should be looking to learn from people who actually understand the IT environment. It is not enough to get certified. This is because it is possible to be certified without being hands-on. Many business analysis recruiters know this and that’s why they typically present scenarios that test real-life applications of the skills.
And that’s why you should be looking to learn Business Analysis, and Agile or Scrum, from Twim Institute. The classes are live, instructor-led online, so where you are in the world doesn’t matter. And very importantly, the classes are taught to give you not only the theoretical background you need to ace the certification exam (Twim Institute is an accredited centre of the British Computer Society, BCS, and offers BCS certifications in business analysis), they give you that practical, project-centred experience that you really need to get into the exciting world of tech.
